Josh is here!

After a long flight, and a crazy journey, Josh has finally touched down in Sydney. And since there's no American football here, that may be the only touchdown we ever see (that one's for you, Ri).

Josh surely hit the ground rolling. The plan was to head back to UNSW to grab a quick nap, but after breakfast and a shower, he was ready to go again. Better to stay up the length of the day and beat jet lag, anyway, so I was all for it. So we headed to Circular Quay, so Josh could lay eyes on the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge! We arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon, as soon as we'd gotten money out of the ATM and gotten ourselves some Australian haircuts. Vivid Sydney is on at the moment - it's a light festival that goes on every night until June 9th. The harbour gets dark around 5:15, and the lights start all over that part of the city at 6.

Since we arrived so early, we had plenty of time to see the sights both in the day and at night. We walked through the botanical gardens to a beautiful lookout point across the water from the Opera House, where people were strewn across the lawn, couples recreated wedding scenes for professional photographers, and boats shipped in and out of the nearby dock. The sun set beautifully over the Opera House, casting gold onto the few pink clouds in the sky and across the water.

Then it was onto Vivid Sydney. Nick, a great friend from the University of Texas at Austin, had been the night before to do some photography. He was kind enough to come along with Josh and I to show us the best spot from which to watch Vivid - and it sure was! Standing near the middle of the Harbour Bridge, we could watch the amazing light show cast onto the Opera House (as if it was a really colourful movie playing on an irregularly shaped screen) without battling the throngs of people that swarmed the CBD (central business district, i.e. "downtown" if it were in America). It was a pretty amazing day, and I hope an even better first day in Australia.
